Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) has already changed the way healthcare works by helping patients stay on top of chronic conditions, reducing hospital visits, and giving providers real-time insights into their patients’ health. Now, with the 2026 CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) code updates, RPM is becoming even more flexible and accessible for patients who don’t need daily monitoring.
What’s Changing in 2026:
The CPT Editorial Panel has introduced two new RPM codes for patients who transmit data less frequently or require minimal clinician oversight. Specifically, these codes apply when:
- CPT 99445 is for the device supplied in RPM for monitoring durations of 2 to 15 days within a 30-day period. This code allows billing for shorter monitoring periods, removing the previous 16-day minimum.
- CPT 99470 covers clinical time for managing patient data when the time is less than the previous minimum. This code is for the first 10 to 19 minutes of clinical staff/physician/other qualified health care professional time per calendar month, requiring at least one real-time interactive communication with the patient/caregiver. It addresses shorter patient engagements that don’t meet the 20-minute threshold of CPT 99457.
In other words, even patients who need lighter monitoring can now benefit from RPM, and providers can bill appropriately for this level of care.
Why This Matters:
- Flexible Care for Patients: Not everyone needs daily monitoring. These new codes allow providers to customize RPM programs to fit each patient’s unique needs.
- Better Access to Technology: More patients can now take advantage of RPM without the burden of intensive daily tracking.
- Early Intervention Made Easier: Even limited monitoring can catch health issues before they escalate, improving outcomes and reducing hospital visits.
